Students must bring a digital camera on the first day of class and for the remainder of the week. This class introduces students to the basics of photography and explores how to create a successful photograph. Students will be shooting in- and out-of-doors on-campus as well as learning basic Photoshop editing skills in ISU’s Mac Lab.

Students complete a variety of projects, using techniques such as wheel throwing and hand-building. Focusing on how a clay work is created from beginning to end, children will gain an understanding about throwing, building, glazing and firing. Students will use underglazes to embellish their artwork.  
Note to Ceramics Students: students will be underglazing their work before final firing. Clay must be completely dry before glazing and firing. All ceramics students are invited to come to class on Monday, August 4, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. At this time ceramics work will be dry and ready for glazing. After the glazing session, the work will be fired and then ready to take home.

This 4-day class is designed for students that want to learn and improve upon painting techniques and skills. Students revisit the basics of painting with acrylics by studying color theory, and mixing and application techniques. Working to improve painting skills, students think creatively while completing projects including realistic and abstract still lifes and self-portraits. Critiques are held to inform students of progress and to improve their “art language”. Students are provided with materials, but are welcome to bring their own tools, if desired.

This class is for the artist who likes to paint! There will be a strong emphasis on color and shape during the exploration of painting like a pro! The week begins with a lesson about basic shapes and areas of color in historical masterpieces. Students challenge their perceptual skills by matching colors, mixing paints, and learning the medium of acrylic paint. The week concludes with a creative project in which students will paint famous artworks upon every day objects such as skateboards, chairs, and guitars. Students are provided with reference images for their paintings. Materials are provided.

This week-long class is designed for artists who love to draw and be creative! Students learn “pencil tricks” that allow the magical creation of words that wiggle, creatures with loads of character, and mysterious castles! The assignments have an underlying emphasis on the elements of design and the basic structures of language, story telling, and creativity. Materials are provided. 

The World of Clay: Introduction

This class explores the infinite possibilities of clay! Students study traditional techniques such as coiling as well as mold and slab work, to create personalized clay creations. Slab vases, coil vessels, pinch pots and creatures are some of the projects children complete. Simple wheel throwing is introduced and students have the opportunity to work behind the wheel, with the help of the instructor. Materials are provided.

Students create three-dimensional artworks using a variety of techniques and materials. Discussions about sculpture will broaden children’s art vocabulary, and lead to a greater understanding about 3-D and relief sculpture.
