Students make their own musical instruments - no experience necessary! While learning about the families of musical instruments, students grasp the basic mechanics of sound production. Using both new and recycled materials to make the instruments, students then construct a simple instrument from each instrument family from scratch! At the end of the week, students perform a short concert on their band of DIY instruments.

This class provides diverse multicultural learning experience using age appropriate activities, games, singing and stories.  Children explore music and instruments from other countries including China, Germany, Africa and more. At the end of the week the class will present an informal recital to share the songs they have learned with family and friends. All materials are provided. Come and join us for a fun and educational musical trip around the world! No previous music experience required. 

Jazz Camp

During this course, students explore the basics of performing in a small jazz combo. Participants work on developing an understanding of the jazz language, including reading lead sheets, interpreting chord symbols, and developing improvisational skills. Participants are required to have previous experience on their instruments and have a basic knowledge of reading music. All instruments accepted. Drum set, piano, and amplifiers for guitar are provided; all other instruments must be provided by students and brought to class. Students participate in a performance on the last day of class. Students must bring a brown-bag lunch to class.

My First Piano Camp

This camp is designed for children who are considering starting piano lessons. No experience is required! Throughout the week, students use songs, games and hands-on activities to learn musical basics that prepare them for piano lessons. To learn about the concepts of beat and rhythm, children make their own percussion instruments and participate in group music-making. A variety of different song- and motion-based games and activities are used to learn about pitch. The basics of music notation and the piano keyboard are also taught in a fun, game-based format. This class is for students who are ready to learn about music and have FUN! The week culminates with a demonstration for friends and family.

The ISU Summer Choral Experience is a comprehensive music program for young singers. Designed to assist local middle school and high school choral programs, this week-long event goes well beyond a typical summer music camp. Led by a dynamic staff of ISU faculty and students, participants will work toward improving their individual singing skills through one-on-one private instruction. Additionally, students will attend daily classes designed to improve other aspects of their overall musicianship. These classes include basic piano, basic theory, and how to better sing in both large and small ensemble settings. The event will culminate with a public recital on Friday, July 18, in which all participants will have an opportunity to perform a prepared solo.

This camp is designed for students who are ready to get more serious about studying music. Learning music theory and skills is a great way to improve performance, both in private lessons and in school ensembles. Students learn the basics of music notation through speed-based games and activities. Campers are introduced to solfege, sight-reading, conducting, and rhythm reading using movement and group improvisation in a fun setting. The basics of music analysis and composition, using both classical and popular music, is also explored. Students have the opportunity to learn about various career paths that incorporate music.
