This class is for beginning to intermediate level students. No prior sculpture or welding experience is necessary. The emphasis of this class is the exploration of 3-dimensional form. Students will learn how monumental sculpture is produced through the creation of small-scale models, also called “maquettes”. Students will be introduced to the fundamental techniques of welding, cutting, grinding and shaping of steel to produce works of art. Most tools and equipment will be provided.

The lab fee is $50; payable with registration fee. Each student will receive one 12-gauge steel sheet, hot rolled, 32 x 48 inches. Although this will be sufficient for the duration of the class, students may purchase additional steel from supplier (locally owned Kelly Metals may be the most convenient option). If you wish to purchase your own steel, you must let the office know upon enrollment. On the first day of class, students are required to bring their own safety goggles and protective gloves. Ear plugs are optional; but recommended. Please wear proper footwear; closed shoes or running shoes made of leather or other thick material. Nylon or synthetic running shoes are not recommended.
